Discovery, the flagship venue from Sheffield-based hospitality brand Scrannery, has officially opened its doors at the Pennine Five development on the city’s Innovation Spine.

Located within Building Four of the mixed-use campus near Tenter Street, Discovery has been designed as a space for meetings, conversation and day-to-day café use, serving businesses, students, and visitors working along Sheffield’s Innovation Spine.

The venue includes three bookable areas: The Snug, a small private room for one-to-one meetings; The Studio, a flexible space for workshops and talks; and The Floor, an adaptable area for larger events. Daytime café service runs throughout the week, with extended evening opening from Wednesday to Friday.

Scrannery, founded in Sheffield, operates a number of cafés across the region. Discovery is the brand’s flagship site and has been developed to respond to the mix of offices, residential buildings, and public space at Pennine Five.

Artwork by Sheffield-based visual artist Jo Peel features throughout the space. Known for her distinctive line drawings and large-scale murals documenting urban landscapes, Peel’s work captures the texture and character of cities in transition. Her bold, pared-back style — often combining black-and-white architectural forms with blocks of colour — reflects Discovery’s setting at the heart of Sheffield’s evolving Innovation Spine.

Peel, whose work has been commissioned internationally and exhibited at venues including Sheffield’s Millennium Gallery, has long been part of the city’s creative scene, and her contribution grounds the venue firmly in its local context.

Dave King, co-founder of Scrannery and managing director of Sheffield-based Intelligent Transformation consultancy Differentis, said: “Pennine Five is quickly becoming a focal point for businesses in this part of the city. We saw an opportunity to create a space that supports that community — somewhere people can meet properly, work comfortably and spend time without feeling rushed.

“Being based here ourselves, we understand how people use the campus day to day, and Discovery has been shaped around that.”

Co-founder Kieran Morgan-McGeehan added: “Scrannery has always been rooted in Sheffield, and opening at Pennine Five felt like a natural next step for us. Discovery carries the same approach we apply across our cafés — good food, proper coffee and considered spaces — but on a larger scale.

“We’re pleased to be contributing to a development that is bringing more activity back into this part of the city centre.”

Christina Staniforth, RBH Campus Manager, said: “We are delighted to have the new cafe bar open on the plaza. The space has been designed to enhance amenities on-site for tenants, but also to bring more people onto the plaza to enjoy our evergreen space.

“We’re really looking forward to seeing a wide range of events this year, from AI workshops, business networking, summer BBQs and even a board game evening. If you want great coffee, freshly baked pastries, nutritious lunches or an after-work drink on the plaza, come and discover Discovery.”

The opening follows earlier planning approval for a café-bar unit within the development’s central plaza. Outdoor seating will form part of the courtyard area.
