Bruton Knowles has played a key advisory role in the development of the new £250 million Cambridge South railway station, a government-funded project set to enhance the UK’s transport infrastructure and stimulate economic growth.
The national chartered surveyor supported Network Rail, a long-term client, throughout the project, which introduces the UK’s first Great British Rail branded station. Strategically located to serve the Cambridge Biomedical Campus (CBC), Europe’s largest centre for medical research and health science, the station will improve direct rail connections to Cambridge, London, Stansted, and Birmingham Airport.
The firm’s National Utilities & Infrastructure Team provided comprehensive guidance from the project’s inception to completion. Their responsibilities included advising on land negotiations, managing complex agreements, addressing compensation issues, securing access, and ensuring compliance with the Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO) process.
Bruton Knowles engaged closely with major private stakeholders affected by the development to facilitate the efficient delivery of the new four-platform station. This facility will also serve as a crucial precursor to the East West Rail (EWR) project, enhancing regional connectivity, reducing journey times, and supporting local economic expansion.
Sam Dobney, Partner at Bruton Knowles and Head of Compulsory Purchase, collaborated on the project alongside Partner Theresa Tschainer and Land Rights Officer George Barrett. Dobney stated: “This is a significant piece of infrastructure, not just for the southeast, but also for the surrounding regions and their communities. Our team has worked extensively with Network Rail and other key stakeholders and entities to optimise the site’s location and maximise the boost it will have on the economy, and we are delighted to have contributed our land expertise to the project.”
Bruton Knowles is recognised as one of the UK’s leading independent chartered surveying firms, offering specialist advice in valuation, commercial property, utilities and infrastructure, compulsory purchase, and land rights.
