Cornish Town’s Market Street to Revitalise Local Economy and Culinary Scene
Market Curators will provide consultancy services to The Duchy of Cornwall, including layout and design plans, financial forecasting, and an operational model for the proposed market and food hall at Nansledan’s Market Street development. The firm will also engage with local residents to gather input on aspects like the tenant mix and operating hours, aiming to create a vibrant destination that supports local jobs and businesses while catering to residents and visitors alike.
The UK’s leading specialist market and food hall development consultancy, Market Curators, has been appointed by The Duchy of Cornwall to provide specialist advisory support for its coming high street development at Nansledan called “Market Street”.
Market Curators, which works with a variety of clients, including public and private sector organisations, is supporting The Duchy with a proposed market and food hall in phase one of the high street.
Market Street itself is set to become a vibrant and thriving shopping, lifestyle, and leisure destination for Cornwall, to benefit residents and the many year-round visitors to the area, and the market hall will provide an exciting new offer within phase one. The project will also support local jobs and businesses, whilst providing an exciting venue for existing and future residents.
The support will include consultancy services aimed at the layout and design of the market and food hall, as well as working with architects on the final designs, as well as 10-year financial forecasting and delivering an operational model for the venue. The business was also appointed to undertake engagement with local people about plans for the market and food hall, seeking views on themes such as the potential tenant mix and opening hours.
James Wrigley, director at Market Curators said: “Our specialist team of market experts have been appointed to this brief to help the Duchy of Cornwall realise the significant benefits that a thriving market offering can bring to an area. Whilst Nansledan is a new town, the plans for a market will be a big draw to future visitors and those who are seeking to make their home here. The vision for Market Street is what good placemaking is all about and having a market at the heart of the town will deliver significant benefits.”
Sam Kirkness, development manager at Nansledan for The Duchy of Cornwall, added: “We’ve been very impressed with the experience that Market Curators have brought to the table. The team has worked seamlessly with The Duchy of Cornwall and other project partners, such as our architects to bring the market and food hall to life. Their understanding of the markets’ sector in the UK will bring undoubted benefits to the town, in the form of creating a thriving space that we can all be proud of.”
Plans for Market Street continue to develop in 2024, with work due to commence in early 2025 and the first market tenants taking up residence from 2026 — which will include local independent street food operators, chef’s creating ‘passion projects’, a local brewery, and an artisan local coffee operator.
Nansledan will eventually have around 4,000 homes and has been designed by the Duchy of Cornwall as a sustainable urban extension to Newquay that can meet local housing needs and support local employment. More than 770 homes have been built so far, and Nansledan is already home to around 40 businesses.
