Firecrest Construction Delivers New 40-Bed Care Home for Exemplar Health Care in Bury
Leeds-based Firecrest Construction has completed the development of a 40-bed care home in Bury town centre, commissioned by Exemplar Health Care. The project, undertaken as principal contractor, was finished on schedule and within budget after 64 weeks, ready for its planned opening later this year.
Named ‘Jubilee Heights’, the facility will offer nursing care for adults with complex needs, including brain injuries, dementia, mental health conditions, neuro-disabilities, and physical disabilities. This marks Exemplar Health Care’s sixth location in Greater Manchester and is expected to generate approximately 100 new jobs.
The care home occupies the former site of the Bury Police headquarters, which was vacated in 2010 and demolished in 2016. Firecrest Construction carried out comprehensive site remediation and groundwork before constructing the 70,000 square foot building, which spans two to three storeys. The company also completed external works such as car parking equipped with electric vehicle charging points, lighting, and landscaped garden areas.
Callum Hepples, Commercial Manager at Firecrest Construction, commented: “We are delighted to complete the successful delivery of Jubilee Heights, our first project for Exemplar Health Care. We specialise in delivering complex projects in the care sector and so our credentials were matched with the challenges brought forward on this site.”
He added, “As a former Police HQ, the site is located in the heart of the town, with a thoroughfare that is constantly busy and quite restricted in terms of access and space. We delivered this project without disruption to the highways and adjacent sports centre, public car park and dense residential zone.”
Hepples further explained the internal design considerations: “Due to the complex needs of the care home residents, the internal provisions were very important for safety and security. We constructed four secure units, each containing 10 en-suite bedrooms, to include sensory bathrooms, an activities hub, dedicated therapy rooms and amenities. We installed specific measures for secure drug store accessibility and protection from electrics and heat appliances.”
Firecrest Construction collaborated with Watson Batty Architects, Dudleys Consulting Engineers, and Pennington Choices Surveyor and Consulting on the project.
Exemplar Health Care, a leading UK provider of nursing care for adults with complex needs, has operated for over 25 years and manages more than 60 community-based care homes nationwide, offering alternatives to hospital settings.
Jess Taylor, Home Manager at Exemplar Health Care, stated: “Our aim is to make every day better for our residents by providing person-centred care that focuses on maximising independence, building everyday living skills and empowering people to live as fulfilled lives as possible.”
She continued, “The home will create a significant number of local healthcare employment opportunities, whilst also making sure the local community has access to a much-needed complex needs care service. It’s our ambition for the home to be a place where our residents can be part of the community, whether through work placements, local events or volunteering.”
