Newey Ltd Expands with Sustainable Butterlees Tree Park to Boost Ornamental Tree Production

Newey Ltd, one of the UK’s largest plant producers and specialist propagators, has announced a major expansion of its Newlands facility with the development of their new Butterlees Tree Park – a purpose-built site designed to support sustainable, high-volume ornamental tree production.
The total area of the new Butterlees development spans 20 acres, strategically located behind Newey’s existing 22-acre glasshouse site, culminating in a combined production area of 42 acres. This new expansion includes 10 acres dedicated to tree production, 6 acres planned for multispan polythene structures, and the remaining 4 acres for reservoir and associated storage space – all focused on ornamental plants. This significant growth not only enhances overall production capacity but also improves operational efficiency, positioning Newey Ltd to better meet the increasing demand in the ornamental horticulture sector.
Butterlees Tree Park has been designed with sustainability and scale in mind. It will accommodate up to 100,000 container-grown trees, including a wide A–Z range of ornamental varieties and a “Grow Your Own” fruit tree selection featuring apples, pears, cherries, and plums. These trees will serve both retail and wholesale markets.
A key feature of the site is its newly constructed 5,700 cubic meter reservoir, which includes rainwater harvesting capabilities and provides enough water to support peak growing months of July, August, and September. The irrigation system is fully automated, with each tree fed by an individual drip line – ensuring efficient water use and consistent plant quality. The reservoir was part-funded through the Government’s Rural Payment Scheme.
The initial planning for the project began back in 2021, with construction taking place back in Autumn 2023 with over £1.2 million worth of investment and opened in June this year.
Open days are scheduled for September 10th and 11th, offering customers and partners a first look at the new facility. The open days will also include a seminar from an industry leading speaker, an opportunity to meet the suppliers who support in producing tree Newey’s crop and a workshop on tree grafting.
