Newey Ltd Secures Planning for New Tree Nursery Site in Chichester
Newey Ltd, one of the UK’s largest plant producers and specialist propagators, has secured planning approval for a new 2.5-acre Intermediate Tree Site in Chichester, to support the recently launched Butterlees Tree Park. The purpose-built facility will strengthen Newey’s production capacity and reinforce its commitment to quality, biosecurity and sustainable horticulture.
The new site will operate as a dedicated nursery where small bare‑root or container-grown young plants are grown in 3 and 4L pots prior to potting into their final 10L or 12L containers. The controlled environment will give Newey greater oversight of plant health and quality, improving consistency and reliability across the supply chain. The development will include polythene structures, outdoor production beds, a reservoir and holding tanks designed specifically to support this critical intermediate stage of tree growth.
Newey currently grows approximately 50,000 intermediates per year. The new Chichester site provides the infrastructure required to scale production further in response to rising demand for high-quality, UK-grown trees.
“This new Intermediate Tree Site represents a significant investment in the long‑term resilience of our tree production. By creating a purpose-built environment dedicated to this vital stage of development, we can enhance our biosecurity, deliver even higher quality plants, and strengthen our ability to meet the needs of customers across the UK. It’s an exciting step forward for our team and for the future of British horticulture,” said Jonathan Marquis, Newey Ltd.
