The traditional greenhouse is undergoing a transformation, evolving from a purely functional structure to a stylish, design-centric feature that enhances the overall aesthetic of gardens. According to Forest Garden, the UK’s largest manufacturer and distributor of wooden garden products, this shift is evident in recent research findings.

The study reveals that 68 per cent of greenhouse owners surveyed intend to paint their greenhouses this summer. Among those planning to refresh their structures, a significant 66 per cent are opting for shades of green. Darker hues follow closely behind, with 17 per cent choosing black or grey, while 11 per cent prefer blue, and six per cent are opting for pink.

Jenny Davis, Head of Marketing for Forest Garden, commented on the evolving role of greenhouses, stating: “Greenhouses are more than just a space for tending to your seedlings and plants. We’re seeing more and more the impact gardening can have on your mental health and there’s a lot to be said for disappearing to the greenhouse for a breather. Hands in the soil, watering and general pottering, it’s very good for the soul.”

Davis further emphasised the creative potential of gardening, noting, “Gardening is also such a creative activity and just invites self-expression – the plants we choose and grow, the colours we want to see blooming. It’s creative. And so why wouldn’t the greenhouse become part of that same vibe?”

Forest Garden offers a diverse selection of wooden greenhouses, ranging from Georgian and Victorian-inspired designs to traditional glasshouses. They also provide lean-to greenhouses, ideal for smaller gardens and yards, which maximise growing potential within a limited space.

For those eager to embark on a greenhouse renovation this spring, Jenny advises that preparation is crucial. She stated, “If you’re buying a new wooden greenhouse, the best time to decorate it is before it’s fully assembled. Painting panels while they’re still flat makes the job far easier and results in a more professional finish. All of our wooden greenhouses are delivered with protective coverings over the glazing, which means you can paint without worrying about masking windows or damaging glass.”

To personalise the space further, Jenny suggests incorporating decorative elements such as lights, bunting, or seating to create a unique retreat. She remarked, “This is your haven for escapism. Make it your own in every way you can. We love seeing greenhouses with beautiful accessories styled within them. Just be mindful that decorations will age in the bright sunlight.”

The research conducted by Forest Garden was shared through their Instagram channel, with 106 respondents participating. Their range of greenhouses is currently available, with prices starting at £417.99.
