PTC Enhances Augmented Reality Solution Vuforia with Step Check™ for Streamlined Visual Inspections on Shop Floors

PTC launches Step Check for Vuforia

PTC, a leading digital transformation specialist in the UK, has introduced an important feature to its augmented reality solution, Vuforia, to support and simplify visual inspections on shop floors nationwide.

The newly introduced Step Check™ by PTC offers employees a step-by-step guide through inspection tasks, providing context-sensitive work instructions. These instructions are superimposed on the physical product under inspection and leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) to detect improper assembly, missing or misaligned parts, and other errors.

By displaying color-coded graphics in real time on the part or product being inspected, operatives can quickly determine whether it has passed the inspection step.

Furthermore, Step Check automatically documents inspection results and generates dashboards for comprehensive analysis of performed inspections.

JJ Lechleiter, General Manager of Vuforia at PTC, explained, “Step Check utilizes advanced computer vision to identify parts or products for inspection using their 3D CAD models. It then applies an AI model based on examples of passed and failed inspections. The AI models learn from employee decisions, leading to continuous improvement in results. Vuforia’s computer vision capabilities can also recognize elements not included in 3D CAD models, such as stickers or labels.”

Step Check is an addition to PTC’s Vuforia Expert Capture SaaS Augmented Reality solution, renowned for its ability to create step-by-step AR work instructions quickly and easily.

This new feature specifically focuses on enhancing visual inspection in quality control, a critical phase of the manufacturing process. Traditionally, these inspections rely on the naked eye and paper-based documentation, which can increase the pressure on employees to make quick decisions and raise the risk of errors and rework.
