Sheffield’s vibrant cultural landscape has been enriched with the opening of Electric Studios, a new music venue that officially welcomes visitors this Friday, 13 March. This establishment is set to become a hub for live music, electronic culture, and grassroots creativity in the city centre.

With a packed schedule of club events already in place, Electric Studios has announced an impressive array of live performances for the year ahead, reflecting a strong demand from the local community. The venue’s inaugural season is gaining traction, with two concerts already sold out months in advance and others selling quickly.

The initial line-up features a diverse range of artists, including indie electronic pioneers St Etienne, the cult US alternative rock band The Lemonheads, Welsh hip hop favourites Goldie Lookin’ Chain, the rising indie band Overpass, and the legendary British folk rock group The Levellers. Additionally, a special one-night performance of Stop Making Sense Live will celebrate the iconic Talking Heads concert film.

The swift sell-out of tickets for both The Levellers and St Etienne underscores the enthusiasm for live music in Sheffield and the excitement surrounding the venue’s opening events. Beyond touring acts, Electric Studios will also spotlight local talent with key nights, such as Toddla T’s influential Steeze Factory takeover on Thursday, 20 March, featuring Window Kid, Saint Ludo, and Kasst 8, alongside a live session called Bigger Den We that showcases emerging local artists.

The launch weekend kicks off on Friday with a major event in collaboration with Worried About Henry, one of the UK’s leading drum and bass promoters. This night promises a stellar line-up, including chart-topping producer Wilkinson, alongside Camo and Krooked, Culture Shock, and Harriet Jaxxon. Wilkinson has established himself as a prominent figure in modern drum and bass, with several UK Top 40 hits to his name.

On Saturday, 14 March, the festivities continue with a live dub session headlined by Gentleman’s Dub Club, featuring Mungo’s Hi Fi and Aziza Jaye on the Sinai Sound. Since their formation in Leeds in 2006, Gentleman’s Dub Club has become a dynamic force in the UK reggae and dub scene, known for electrifying performances at major festivals such as Glastonbury and Boomtown. Their latest album, On a Mission, released in 2024, showcases their unique fusion of dub, reggae, and electronic music.

In addition to the main stage performances, the second room will celebrate Sheffield’s deep-rooted sound system culture, powered by the Dubcentral Sound System. This space will feature a full crew of selectors, including Papa Al and Kom Kom from JuJu Club and Junglist Alliance, delivering a heavyweight session that connects the international dub scene with Sheffield’s underground community.

Looking ahead, Electric Studios plans to maintain its momentum with the Electric Loves series, collaborating with various promoters and underground collectives such as RAZE, Snafu, and Big Fat Rave. Upcoming artists include Ross From Friends, Jeremy Underground, Dr Banana, sim0ne, Call Super, Sully, and Samurai Breaks.

Moreover, Electric Studios is committed to fostering creativity within the community. Plans are underway to provide free studio access for young people, offering emerging artists a space to rehearse, record, and develop their work. A visual arts programme is also in the pipeline, with exhibitions featuring Sheffield-based artists expected later this year.

Dominic Madden, Co-founder of Electric Studios, expressed his enthusiasm for the venue’s opening: “Opening Electric Studios has been a long time coming, and it’s exciting to finally welcome people in. The response already has been amazing, with shows like St Etienne and The Levellers selling out months ahead of time. For us, it’s about creating a space that works for the whole scene, from touring artists and club nights to the next generation coming through. We’re also developing plans to open up free creative workspace in the building so young people in the city have somewhere to meet, collaborate, and start developing their own ideas and projects.”

As Electric Studios opens its doors this Friday, it joins Sheffield’s rich tradition of independent music venues, providing a new platform for artists, promoters, and audiences alike.
