Beach House Art adds five Cornish beaches to coastal collection
Beach House Art has added paintings of five Cornish beaches to its coastal art collection, in a series by Cornish artist Holly Cecilia Smith. The works depict Porthmeor, Sennen Cove, Trevaunance Cove, Porthtowan and Porthleven.
Smith painted each piece on location at different times of day, responding to changing light, weather and movement. Rather than simply recording a view, the paintings aim to capture the atmosphere of the coastline.
“I don’t particularly want someone to look at one of my paintings and understand exactly what I was thinking. I’d rather leave a little space for them,” Holly said.
“So much of making the work is really just practising paying attention, noticing how somewhere changes, returning to it, looking again. If living with one of my paintings makes someone pause occasionally and do a little of that too, I think I’d be very happy.”
The collection reflects an approach to decorating with art chosen for its personal meaning – whether it recalls a place, person or moment – rather than simply matching a room’s furnishings.
Sarah Weare, Co-Founder of Beach House Art, said: “The art we choose for our homes can be incredibly personal. A picture of somewhere you know and love can instantly transport you back there. Whether that’s a beach you visited every summer as a child, something you discovered on holiday or simply a place where you feel completely at ease.
“We love the idea that artwork can do more than fill a blank wall. It can bring a little piece of somewhere special into your everyday life.”
The five paintings are the latest additions to Beach House Art’s wider coastal collection, which also draws on seaside activities such as surfing and sailing, oystercatchers searching the coast for shellfish, and shells and seaweed washed ashore.
Smith’s collection is available now, with prices starting at £42. Beach House Art’s wider coastal collections are priced from £18.
