Construction Milestone Reached for Lost Feather Arena at Kynren
Six miles of timber will surround The Lost Feather Arena
Construction at Kynren – The Storied Lands has reached a significant milestone with the development of the Lost Feather arena, set to open in July. This ambitious project features a striking sculptural bird’s nest, which is central to the arena’s design.
Over 2,250 timber lengths, each measuring four metres, are being meticulously woven together, amounting to more than 9,000 metres (six miles) of timber. This intricate process is transforming raw materials into what promises to be one of the most visually impressive performance spaces in the UK.
Once completed, the arena will accommodate 2,500 spectators for The Lost Feather, a groundbreaking live action spectacle that merges emotional storytelling with a unique free-flying bird experience. The production will take place within a beautifully designed landscape featuring water elements and hillside staging, showcasing over 250 birds in free flight to create a powerful and engaging experience that emphasises both performance and conservation.
Anna Warnecke, CEO of Kynren, remarked, “The scale of what is now taking shape is extraordinary. When you begin to understand the materials involved – quite literally miles of timber – you start to see the ambition behind The Lost Feather. This is not just an arena; it is a landmark structure that will define this new chapter for Kynren. There is a real sense of momentum on site now, and it is incredibly exciting to see it coming to life ahead of July.”
The nest structure is designed to embody both an organic and permanent feel, aligning with the overarching creative vision of The Storied Lands, which is rooted in nature, heritage, and storytelling. The Lost Feather is being developed in partnership with leading avian specialists to ensure it meets the highest standards of conservation and education.
This experience will be part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing public awareness of bird species and their conservation. As part of Phase One of Kynren – The Storied Lands, the arena will be complemented by a series of new live-action experiences, positioning Bishop Auckland as a key destination for cultural tourism in the UK.
With the opening day on 18 July approaching, the progress on The Lost Feather marks a pivotal moment in the development of the new park and heralds the arrival of what is expected to be one of its most iconic attractions.
