Liverpool’s Victorian Hydraulic Pumphouse at Stanley Dock is undergoing a £1.5 million refurbishment to become a new 120-seat pizzeria named 1848 Stanley Dock, scheduled to open this winter.

The Grade II-listed building, part of the iconic waterfront, will be operated by Titanic Hotel Liverpool and is owned by Harcourt Developments. The 4,400 sq ft (410 sq m) venue pays homage to the dock’s original opening year, 1848, by Jesse Hartley.

The design merges the historic character of the pumphouse with modern architectural elements. A prominent feature is a glass-walled extension with ceilings reaching 18.5 ft, offering views over the dock and access to a waterfront dining terrace through glazed doors.

A 23 ft-high atrium will link this extension to the original brick boiler room, forming a central dining area and cocktail bar. Additional seating will be provided by a new galleried mezzanine, featuring exposed brick walls on the lower level and a private dining and lounge space above.

Brian Connor, general manager of Titanic Hotel Liverpool, commented: “1848 is an exciting addition to Stanley Dock and provides an opportunity to give another one of the site’s historic buildings a new lease of life. The venue has such a distinctive character, and as with Titanic Hotel, retaining its original features while creating a contemporary space has been a key priority throughout the redevelopment. We’re looking forward to welcoming guests to 1848 Stanley Dock later this year, and introducing a new dining experience to Liverpool.”

Stanley Dock itself opened in 1848, with the pumphouse added in 1855 to house hydraulic pumping systems that powered dock gates, capstans, cargo cranes, and tobacco presses across the North and South Warehouses. The dock ceased operations in 1985 due to the decline of Liverpool’s maritime trade. Harcourt Developments acquired the site in 2010 and has since been leading a £250 million regeneration project.

The opening of 1848 Stanley Dock marks the latest phase in this ongoing redevelopment and is expected to attract both locals and visitors to the revitalised waterfront later this year.
