Liverpool ONE Unveils Plans for ‘The Kingdom of the Liver Bird’ Play Area at Chavasse Park

Liverpool ONE has revealed plans to develop a new family-friendly play area at Chavasse Park, named ‘The Kingdom of the Liver Bird’. The play space will span approximately 1,010 square metres and draw inspiration from the iconic Liver Bird, a mythical symbol of Liverpool.

A planning application for the project has been submitted, with construction anticipated to commence in early 2027. The design incorporates several distinctive features aimed at providing diverse play experiences for children of varying ages and abilities.

Key attractions include the Liver Bird Tower with Tube Slide, a prominent tower structure inspired by the city’s emblem, complete with an integrated tube slide. An elevated zipline experience will be accessible via a dedicated launch tower, adding an adventurous element to the site.

Themed zones such as the Fishermen’s Village and Trampoline Area will offer a lively maritime atmosphere paired with energetic trampoline activities. Additionally, a castle-themed structure featuring climbing opportunities and a sweeping slide will encourage active exploration.

Further play elements include the School of Fish Climbing Structure, designed to mimic the movement of a fish school, and landscaped tunnels and hills that promote discovery and movement throughout the area.

Inclusive design principles are central to the project, with interactive and sensory features integrated throughout. These include communication tubes connecting towers to foster social interaction, textured panels for tactile exploration, musical components, busy boards, a rotating mirror, and play boxes. Elevated viewpoints alongside accessible ground-level activities will ensure varied experiences for all children.

To enrich the play area’s narrative, a storytelling competition will be held in partnership with local schools. This initiative aims to develop the theme of the play space, tracing a journey from water to land, with insights from the competition influencing ongoing design development.

Brendan Hattam, Centre Director at Liverpool ONE, commented: “We’re excited to share plans for this major new play space at Chavasse Park, which will further strengthen Liverpool ONE’s family offering and create even more opportunities to spend quality time together outdoors. ‘The Kingdom of the Liver Bird’ has been designed with local families in mind, encouraging fun-filled experiences inspired by a symbol that sits at the heart of the city’s identity.”

He added, “We’re proud to be investing in new family facilities that enhance our offering here and this play area will create a vibrant space for children of all ages to enjoy.”
