The Wesley Hotel Group Celebrates Investors In People Gold Standard with Focus on Career Growth and Sustainability
The Wesley, London
Having recently achieved Investors In People Gold Standard, The Wesley Hotel Group is celebrating its people and their commitments to fostering career growth and development, whilst imparting knowledge on how other businesses can aid their staff with the same support.
With sites in Euston and Camden there are growth opportunities available across multiple departments, including Food & Beverage, Meetings & Events, Front Office, Housekeeping, and Sales & Marketing, The Wesley strongly believes in internal progression, encouraging team members to step into leadership roles when they’re ready, with many of their staff starting in entry-level roles and eventually growing into supervisory or managerial career paths.
With the recent introduction of cross-departmental roles, employees can now expand their skills and transition into other specialised roles within the business and work towards leadership positions.
Some of the hotel group’s training opportunities include:
- On-the-job training tailored to different departments
- Established mentorship programs where junior employees/ new starters are paired with more experienced team members and senior managers
- Professional development support, including funding for relevant industry certifications
- Cross-training initiatives to help employees develop transferable skills across different roles within the business
The Wesley recently invested in external training to provide bespoke in-person tailored sessions for their housekeeping team as well as a separate session for Front of House staff, ensuring targeted skill development and professional growth.
With excellent staff retention and career progression rates, something that is difficult to achieve in the hospitality industry, The Wesley’s statistics reflect a positive and stable work environment.
- 23% of their employees have worked at the hotel for 3 to 5 years, showcasing long-term engagement.
- 58% have been part of the team for 1 to 3 years, highlighting steady growth and a strong onboarding experience.
- 11% have remained with the hotel group for over 5 years, reflecting deep-rooted loyalty and career progression within the organisation.
Audrius, Head of Events and Conferences at The Wesley, commented, “Starting as a receptionist at The Wesley many years ago, I never imagined I would become Head of Events and Conferences. With the dedication and hard work that came with the training and progression opportunities at The Wesley, I was recognised and rewarded for my efforts.”
In addition to role-specific training programmes, the hotel group actively engages in team building activities such as football matches, icebreaker exercises, friendly quizzes, and other initiatives.
Over the years, the brand has received a number of awards, including being awarded with the Investors In People Gold Standard twice in a row. They are also a London Living Wage Employer and a Green Tourism Gold accredited hotel, and as a sustainable hotel brand, who earned an ECOSmart Gold Accreditation last year, they are also working towards achieving carbon net zero by 2030.
James Barr, General Manager at The Wesley, said, “At The Wesley, our mission is to foster an inclusive, supportive, and dynamic workplace where employees can develop their skills, grow professionally, and build long-term careers with us. We strive to create an environment that nurtures talent, provides opportunities for learning, and encourages career progression.
“We believe that career growth is fundamental to both individual success and the success of our business. We are committed to providing our employees with the tools, training, and opportunities they need to thrive and grow with us.”
The hotel group is currently recruiting for full-time positions in its Admin and Sales & Marketing departments, and is also working towards developing new apprenticeship opportunities.
