Mainmark UK Completes Crucial Ground Stabilisation at Tottenham Hale Station Amid Refurbishment
Mainmark UK has finalised essential ground improvement works beneath Tottenham Hale Station’s Platforms 3 and 4, ensuring the ongoing refurbishment of one of London’s busiest transport hubs remains on schedule. The station accommodates National Rail’s Greater Anglia and Stansted Express services, as well as the London Underground’s Victoria line.
Concerns had arisen over the condition of the precast concrete platforms, which showed signs of deterioration that threatened their long-term stability. Previous temporary supports were in place to prevent collapse, but the decision was made to replace the ageing platforms with new glass-reinforced polymer (GRP) structures designed for lower maintenance. To guarantee the ground could support these new platforms, reinforcement was required beneath 77 foundation points.
Commissioned by CML, a Tier One Principal Contractor working with Network Rail and other infrastructure clients, Mainmark utilised its Teretek® engineered resin injection technology. This method enabled rapid ground strengthening without excavation, minimising disruption and allowing completion within just three shifts over a bank holiday weekend.

The project faced engineering challenges due to variable-made ground and granular soils requiring densification. Mainmark’s solution involved targeted resin injections to a depth of two metres beneath each foundation, performed through small-diameter access points. This approach avoided excavation and reduced interference with the broader construction schedule.

Valued at over £150,000, this ground improvement formed part of a larger station upgrade. All activities were conducted within strict rail possession windows, with multiple contractors working concurrently on site.
This successful project highlights the specialist ground engineering capabilities Mainmark will contribute to forthcoming rail infrastructure schemes, including those under the recently awarded Balfour Beatty CP7 Framework. Mainmark is set to support Network Rail’s five-year investment programme, which prioritises maintenance, renewals, digital signalling, safety enhancements, and improvements to freight and passenger services.
Under the CP7 Framework, contractors will undertake a variety of tasks aligned with Network Rail’s Strategic Business Plan, ranging from emergency callouts and planned maintenance to small-scale civil engineering projects.
