Homebuilding and Renovating Shows
The upcoming Scottish Homebuilding & Renovating Shows will address critical design considerations for home extensions, taking place at the SEC in Glasgow on 9–10 May 2026 and at The Royal Highland Centre in Edinburgh on 3–4 October 2026. Experts will provide insights on creating extensions that enhance both functionality and property value.
Property expert Michael Holmes, a speaker at the event, emphasises that many homeowners prioritise space addition without fully considering the extension’s practical implications. Holmes stated: “Many people commit to layouts, heating systems or contractors too early and only discover the consequences later when costs rise or comfort is poor. Good, well-informed decisions at the start, based on research or expert advice, can save tens of thousands of pounds and dramatically improve how a home performs.”
Holmes outlines five common mistakes that homeowners should avoid when planning extensions:
- Designing the extension in isolation: New spaces should integrate seamlessly with the existing structure, rather than appearing as an afterthought.
- Forgetting about natural light: Relying solely on artificial lighting can create dark areas that feel disconnected from the rest of the home.
- Ignoring how the space will be used: Effective extensions take into account daily living patterns, rather than just increasing square footage.
- Poor connection with outdoor space: Extensions that do not adequately link with gardens or outdoor areas miss opportunities to enhance lifestyle and flow.
- Underestimating planning and design: Seeking professional design advice early in the process can prevent expensive structural modifications later on.
Attendees at the show will have the opportunity to hear from architects, designers, and renovation specialists about effective strategies for home improvements. The Scottish Homebuilding & Renovating Show will host over 140 exhibitors, along with free seminars, masterclasses, and one-on-one consultations with industry professionals.
With rising costs associated with moving and an ongoing demand for larger living spaces, many homeowners are opting to enhance their current residences instead of relocating. The Scottish Homebuilding & Renovating Show is set to take place at the SEC, Glasgow on 9–10 May 2026 and at the Royal Highland Centre on 3–4 October 2024.
