Home Entertaining Takes Centre Stage at Ideal Home Show 2026
As the expenses associated with going out continue to rise, a significant shift is occurring in the social habits of Britons, with many now viewing their homes as the centre of social life. This trend is highlighted in new research conducted by the Ideal Home Show, the UK’s longest-running home and lifestyle exhibition, which will take place at Olympia London this April.
The survey findings indicate that over two-fifths of UK adults (42%) have made cosmetic or renter-friendly updates to their homes in the past year. A remarkable 94% of these individuals stated that their motivation for these changes was to enhance their ability to host friends and family.
Furthermore, nearly two-thirds (65%) of adults reported that they have entertained at home as much or more than in the previous year. Among those who are hosting more frequently, over a third (35%) cited the increasing cost of dining out as a primary factor, while almost 40% (37%) indicated that entertaining at home feels more comfortable than gathering in busy venues.
In terms of home improvements, Britons are focusing on creating welcoming and flexible spaces. Almost half (48%) of respondents have refreshed their wall décor, while 36% have added soft furnishings, and 35% have upgraded their lighting to foster warmer, more sociable environments.
Looking to the future, the importance of the home as a social hub is becoming increasingly evident. A substantial 81% of UK adults acknowledged that hosting would be a key consideration if they were to move home, with this figure rising to 91% among those under 45, compared to 74% of individuals aged 45 and over. The most desired features in a future home include a garden, patio, or outdoor space (40%), good natural lighting (34%), and sufficient seating for guests (33%).
The Ideal Home Show, returning for its 118th year at Olympia London from 10-19 April, is set to emphasise themes of entertaining, connection, and lifestyle. The event aims to reflect how homes are increasingly designed around socialising, flexibility, and everyday living.
Feature areas at the show will include social kitchens, alfresco dining, and the BBQ Academy, all aimed at helping visitors create more inviting, multifunctional spaces that cater to contemporary hosting habits.
Giles Perry, Ideal Home Show Director, commented: “Hosting at home has taken on a new meaning. People want spaces that feel welcoming, flexible and personal, places where friends and family can really connect. With UK households adapting their homes in response to changing social habits and economic pressures, this year’s programme is helping them create homes that are ready for entertaining, while also making smarter choices, whatever their budget or plans.”
This year’s show will feature hands-on experiences, including a tablescaping workshop that highlights the growing trend of at-home hosting. Visitors can also engage in immersive sessions, ranging from creative wreath-making to food and drink experiences, such as cocktail-making workshops.
Throughout the event, celebrity experts and industry specialists, including George Clarke, Scarlette and Stuart Douglas, Jason Bradbury, David Domoney, Megan McKenna, Briony Ace, and Matt Tebbutt, will provide trusted advice to assist visitors in refreshing their current spaces and planning future moves. Tickets are currently available from £14 at www.idealhomeshow.co.uk.
