Developers Summerfield and Devon Contractors have celebrated the completion of the structural frame and roof of eight industrial units at Westpark 26 Business Park in Wellington, Somerset. The event marked a traditional topping out ceremony for the project.

The eight units represent half of the planned 16-unit development, which aims to provide high-quality, energy-efficient, and adaptable spaces. Westpark 26 is home to a variety of businesses involved in distribution, warehousing, and manufacturing. Construction on the remaining eight units is advancing steadily, with their structural framework nearing completion.

Each unit has been designed with sustainability as a priority. Features include 15 solar panels per unit, glazed entrance canopies, electric vehicle charging points, and covered cycle storage facilities. The internal layouts offer flexibility, ranging from 163 to 227 square metres, with options for mezzanine floors and office areas. The units also benefit from a 6.5-metre eave height and wide insulated electric loading doors.

The construction process has involved the use of 188 tonnes of steel, 5,471 square metres of cladding, and 352 gabion baskets containing 449 square metres of stone for retaining walls. Landscaping plans incorporate mature hedges and tree lines, alongside bird, bat, and dormouse boxes. External lighting has been carefully designed to minimise environmental impact.

James Holyday, Managing Director of Summerfield Group, expressed satisfaction with the project’s progress while driving in the final screw on the roof, symbolising the completion of the building’s frame. He said: “We are delighted with the progress being made. These units will provide an excellent addition to this popular business park.”

Nigel Whelan, Managing Director of Devon Contractors, which is celebrating its 80th year in construction, also commented on the milestone. “It was a pleasure to join Summerfield Developments to celebrate this important milestone at Plot 19,” he said. “Our two businesses share a long and successful history in the South West and projects like this demonstrate the value of strong partnerships built on trust, quality and a shared commitment to supporting local economic growth. We look forward to completing the development and seeing these new units provide opportunities for businesses in Wellington for years to come.”
