Housebuilder Taylor Wimpey is set to submit a planning application for a significant development of 252 homes at Clasper Village in Gateshead, following a collaborative effort with Gateshead Council to advance the project.
The proposed development aims to rejuvenate the elevated site overlooking the River Tyne, with £3 million in funding secured through North East Mayor Kim McGuinness to prepare the land for construction.
The application will request full planning consent for a diverse range of one to four-bedroom homes, with 15% of the properties designated for purchase by the council. Of these, two-thirds will be allocated for affordable or social rent, while one-third will be available for affordable sale options, including Shared Ownership.
Designed to promote sustainable travel, the development is conveniently located within walking and cycling distance of both Gateshead town centre and Newcastle city centre. The plans include new pedestrian and cycle routes, recreational areas, and enhanced landscaping to improve public spaces.
The design of Clasper Village has been developed in partnership with P+HS Architects, based in the North, who collaborated closely with Taylor Wimpey to create a strong vision for the neighbourhood. The focus is on establishing a walkable community that integrates seamlessly with green spaces and the riverside environment.
Located near the established and award-winning Staiths South Bank neighbourhood, previously developed by Taylor Wimpey, the new plans signify a promising chapter in the ongoing regeneration of Gateshead’s riverside.
Mark Fletcher, Land and Planning Director at Taylor Wimpey North East, remarked, “Submitting our plans for Clasper Village marks a significant milestone for this site. Working in partnership with Gateshead Council and the North East Mayor, our proposals will deliver a thoughtfully designed neighbourhood that reflects the character of the riverside while creating new opportunities for people to live close to the centres of Gateshead and Newcastle. Subject to planning approval, we look forward to seeing this new community take shape in the years ahead.”
Nathan Sanders, Studio Principal and Lead Architect at P+HS Architects, stated, “Clasper Village has been designed as a people-first neighbourhood, with walkable streets, strong links to the riverside and shared spaces that encourage community life.”
Samantha Allcott, Strategic Director for Housing, the Environment and Healthy Communities, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with Taylor Wimpey, stating, “We are really pleased to reach agreement with Taylor Wimpey to bring this fantastic site forward. Their plans for new homes are just what this area needs, as we move our housing regeneration programme onwards. The new residents here will benefit from the newly re-landscaped Askew Road, providing a tree-lined route into the centre of Gateshead and towards the Quays and the lively Railway Quarter.”
North East Mayor Kim McGuinness added, “We’re getting on with delivering new homes where families want them most, in the heart of our towns and cities where we can create stronger communities close to jobs and opportunity. Our £3 million commitment to Clasper Village will help unlock the full potential of a site that has sat unused for too long, and is part of a much bigger transformation for Gateshead we’re leading through new homes at the Old Town Hall, new space for business in the Railway Quarter and £24 million to make Gateshead Quays home to a world-class arena. Together these investments will create hundreds of new jobs and a town centre local people can be really proud of, as we accelerate regeneration throughout the Newcastle-Gateshead area, the North’s most exciting urban growth programme.”
Clasper Village is a key component of Gateshead’s broader regeneration strategy, which was published in Autumn 2025, aimed at delivering new homes alongside enhanced public spaces and green infrastructure.
