UWL Lecturer Showcases Cutting-Edge Heritage Conservation Techniques

Dr Efcharis (Haroula) Balodimou, Senior Lecturer in the Built Environment and Course Leader in Architectural Design Technology at the University of West London (UWL), recently presented a lecture to the Ealing Civic Society, emphasising the university’s expertise in heritage conservation, sustainability, and architectural innovation.

The event, held at Open Ealing in Dickens Yard, drew members of the local community who actively participated throughout the evening. Dr Balodimou’s lecture, titled ‘Innovation in Heritage Conservation: Emerging Practices and Future Directions’, focused on the evolving landscape of heritage preservation.

Drawing from her dual experience as an architect and academic, Dr Balodimou discussed the critical role of conserving historic buildings—not only for their architectural significance but also for safeguarding cultural identity and collective memory. She explored how emerging technologies are revolutionising conservation practices.

During her presentation, Dr Balodimou highlighted advanced tools such as laser scanning, thermal imaging, digital surveying, artificial intelligence, and 3D printing. She demonstrated how these technologies enhance traditional restoration methods, offering new possibilities for protecting heritage sites.

Using the restoration of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris as a case study, she illustrated how innovation and skilled craftsmanship can collaborate to preserve historic structures for future generations. Additionally, Dr Balodimou showcased the School of Computing and Engineering’s Women in STEM (WInSTEM) initiative, underlining UWL’s dedication to promoting diversity and encouraging female participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Reflecting on the lecture, Dr Balodimou said: “It was a pleasure to speak with members of the Ealing Civic Society about the exciting developments taking place in heritage conservation. While digital technologies and artificial intelligence are transforming the way we preserve historic buildings, they complement rather than replace the expertise of architects and conservation professionals. Protecting our built heritage requires both innovation and an appreciation of the cultural significance these places hold.”

Beyond public engagement, Dr Balodimou is actively involved in UWL’s Architecture, Construction and Urban Study Research Group and collaborates with the Faringdon Research Centre for Non-Destructive Testing and Remote Sensing. Her research concentrates on applying non-destructive testing, remote sensing, and digital technologies to heritage conservation and monitoring historic structures, contributing to the development of innovative methods for preserving culturally significant sites.
