Crown Roof Tiles Board Tours New £20 Million Manufacturing Plant in Burton on Trent

Senior executives from Crown Roof Tiles Group, representing the USA and Mexico, recently visited Russell Roof Tiles’ manufacturing site in Burton on Trent to inspect the completion of a new multimillion-pound facility. This investment, exceeding £20 million, has transformed the company’s operations by integrating advanced manufacturing technology with the launch of an innovative roofing product.
The international Board, overseeing Crown as the parent company of Russell Roof Tiles, toured the Nicolson Way plant to evaluate the significant capital expenditure and observe the state-of-the-art production line. This line is dedicated to producing the award-winning Bute3®, a pioneering triple roof tile developed by Russell Roof Tiles, alongside other products.
Before its launch, Bute3® underwent five years of extensive research and development. It stands as the first concrete roof tile of its kind to be mass-produced in the UK. The purpose-built factory is among the largest investments in Russell Roof Tiles’ history, enhancing the company’s long-term manufacturing capabilities.
Russell Roof Tiles currently employs approximately 160 staff across three locations in Burton on Trent and Lochmaben. During the Board’s visit, members met with employees involved in the project and witnessed how the new production technology supports large-scale manufacture of Bute3®.
Bute3® offers the traditional aesthetic of a plain tile roof combined with the efficiency of a modern interlocking tile system. Its triple-tile design enables roofing contractors to cover more area per tile, reducing installation times by up to 33%.
The new facility incorporates cutting-edge manufacturing and curing technologies to enhance product quality, consistency, strength, and production efficiency. It also expands Russell Roof Tiles’ capacity to meet growing demand for the Bute3® roofing system.
The company recently marked the sale of its one millionth Bute3® tile, which has quickly become its fastest-growing product since launch. The tile is specified on over 80 developments across the UK and has transitioned from trial projects to standard use in major housing developments by leading builders.
